Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage helps to reduce stress and strain in your body to maintain your best health.

Firstly, Deep Tissue DOES NOT mean painful massage! However, as the name implies it does mean that you will experience more intense massage techniques than offered in traditional Swedish massage.

In my experience, Deep Tissue massage is most beneficial for clients who say they are in ‘need’ of a massage, whereas Swedish massage tends to attract clients who say they ‘would like or want’ a massage. The Deep tissue ‘need’, is generally linked to the considerable amounts of tension, anxiety and stress which accumulate through the conditions of modern living.

The conventional Deep Tissue massage uses a combination of techniques including; Cross fibre frictions, Active release techniques, Muscle energy techniques, Trigger point therapy and Myofascial release.  A Therapist will naturally use these methods with a variety of repetitions and variable pressures to tailor the Deep tissue massage treatment for your body’s requirements.

Cross fibre frictions are used by the therapist in an attempt to break down and decrease knots and lesion formed by micro tears, breaks or sprains. This technique is very effective at increasing circulation and promoting healing of muscles, tendons and ligaments. The therapist uses transverse strokes to promote a stretching and broadening in large muscle groups. This stimulates strength and flexibility while reducing scar tissue during the healing process.

Active release techniques are used by therapist to alleviate pain and stiffness in muscles and joints that can cause limitations in flexibility and mobility. In addition to cross fibre frictions, active release techniques help to combat the build-up of fibrous tissues and adhesions produced by repetitive movements. The therapist will pinpoint the target for manipulation of knots and adhesions in muscles to restore good blood flow and promote healing.

Muscle energy techniques require participation of the client in the form of gentle muscle contractions. The client is requested to assist the therapist to bring about relaxation and lengthening of the muscles to normalize joint motion.

Trigger point therapy is technique used on chronic areas of pain which may originate in a different site from where the client is experiencing pain, tension or restriction. Therapist will apply pressure to depolarize muscles and effectively turn off the tension in adjacent muscles. This technique is highly effective at managing pain and stress in chronic injuries.

Myofascial release is a techniques that consists of applying gentle and sustained pressure into myofascial connective tissue that can cause restriction in joint motion and pain. Myofascial tissue often becomes tight and sticky around tight muscles, a good therapist is able to unstick the surrounding tissue to reduce the sensation of muscle soreness.
